A collection "Drawings from Prison" were made between 1951 and 1959 in the prisons of the Penitentiary of Lisbon, where Álvaro Cunhal spent seven years in rigorous isolation, and from the Fort of Peniche, from where he escaped on January 3, 1960. They were first published by the "Avante!" Editions in December 1975 as part of fundraising initiatives for the Portuguese Communist Party.

The composition captures the harsh, barren landscape in the background, with leafless trees that hint at the difficult conditions of the environment. Despite the toil, there is a sense of camaraderie and shared effort among the workers, their movements synchronized as they work together to move the cart forward. The scene serves as a testament to human endurance and the collective strength of individuals united in a common task.
