A collection "Drawings from Prison" were made between 1951 and 1959 in the prisons of the Penitentiary of Lisbon, where Álvaro Cunhal spent seven years in rigorous isolation, and from the Fort of Peniche, from where he escaped on January 3, 1960. They were first published by the "Avante!" Editions in December 1975 as part of fundraising initiatives for the Portuguese Communist Party.

The light source is a single lantern, held by one of the central figures, casting soft shadows and emphasizing the gravity of the scene. The figures’ postures and expressions convey deep respect and quiet sorrow. The gathering evokes themes of community, loss, and the rituals surrounding death, set in a rural environment. The stark contrasts in light and dark enhance the emotional weight of the scene, emphasizing both the fragility of life and the solidarity of those left behind.
