A collection "Drawings from Prison" were made between 1951 and 1959 in the prisons of the Penitentiary of Lisbon, where Álvaro Cunhal spent seven years in rigorous isolation, and from the Fort of Peniche, from where he escaped on January 3, 1960. They were first published by the "Avante!" Editions in December 1975 as part of fundraising initiatives for the Portuguese Communist Party.

The soft, rounded forms of the figures, combined with the delicate shading, convey a sense of warmth and human connection. The larger figure’s hands gently cradle the head of the other, evoking a feeling of protection and care. The minimalist background draws attention to the closeness between the figures, emphasizing the emotional depth of the scene. A faint sketch in the corner hints at this theme of care, possibly suggesting the continuation of a nurturing bond.
