A collection "Drawings from Prison" were made between 1951 and 1959 in the prisons of the Penitentiary of Lisbon, where Álvaro Cunhal spent seven years in rigorous isolation, and from the Fort of Peniche, from where he escaped on January 3, 1960. They were first published by the "Avante!" Editions in December 1975 as part of fundraising initiatives for the Portuguese Communist Party.

The intensity of the battle is captured through the swirling composition, where bodies and horses overlap, evoking a sense of movement and violence. The monochromatic tones, combined with the expressive lines, heighten the emotional impact of the piece. The contrast between the force of the mounted figures and the vulnerability of those on the ground highlights the brutality of war and the human cost involved.
