A collection "Drawings from Prison" were made between 1951 and 1959 in the prisons of the Penitentiary of Lisbon, where Álvaro Cunhal spent seven years in rigorous isolation, and from the Fort of Peniche, from where he escaped on January 3, 1960. They were first published by the "Avante!" Editions in December 1975 as part of fundraising initiatives for the Portuguese Communist Party.

The figures in the foreground are depicted in light, flowing lines, their movements graceful and synchronized as they celebrate. The distant figures on horseback seem to leap in harmony with the celebrants on the ground, suggesting a shared joy and sense of freedom. The subtle shading and expansive composition evoke a sense of unity, liberation, and the power of communal celebration.
